The department of Marathi was introduced in the year 1945. Prof. L. M. Bhingare was the first lecturer in Marathi. The eminent tradition of the department was kept alive by renowned professors like Prof. S.R. Bhide, Prof. G. M. Kulkarni, and Prof. Vidyadhar Pundlik. The Late Prof. G. M. Kulkarni has made a name as a poet, philosopher and critic in the Marathi literary world. His contribution in compiling Marathi Encyclopedia is laudable. Miss. N. G. Kulkarni heads the Department of Marathi at present. The Department offers a degree in B.A. with Marathi as one of the three main subjects. Marathi as a core subject has two combinations with other optional subjects. Basic Marathi has three combinations with other MILs.
